What to do in Cape Town

cape town

Hey Fashionistas,

This is part six of my travel series and our journey is close to the end. Our next stop is Cape Town. When we started traveling I was very excited to arrive in Cape Town.

Day 1:

We stayed at a hotel near the harbor. The temperature felt more like Los Angeles winter - cold but sunny. We checked into our hotel and used the rest of the remaining day to do the Lions Head Hike. I previously looked up the hike and was prepared to do it. We called an Uber who drove us to the trail entrance. We started our hike in the afternoon and about an hour we made it to the top.
The past 20 minutes were less hiking and more climbing. Very fun but also a bit scary considering the fact you need to pull yourself up on ropes and wall hooks.

The mountain top was covered in clouds and eventually, the sun was able to break through offering us to view the city from on top. Cape Town what a beautiful city! We took some pictures before making our way back down.

Before heading back to the hotel we drove to a mall close to our hotel to get some food and buy some new shirts.

Day 2:

After eating breakfast we got picked up for our first tour. On the agenda today driving to the Cape of Good Hope with a few stops along the way. We were the only ones on the tour - good for us. The day started rainy and cloudy but our mood was great - and that’s all that matters.

Our guide drove us along the coast telling us different stories about the neighborhoods and streets. He stopped at some amazing viewing points for us to take pictures. After a few stops, we arrived at the Cape of Good Hope. It was actually a good time for us to come during winter since tourists season is low. At the Cape of Good Hope, our guide served tea and cookies and we admired the view.

The next up we took a little train up a hill to a lighthouse overlooking the Cape of Good Hope. We continued our journey to see the African Penguins and to have some lunch.

The penguins are so cute and small. They live right at the beach in colonies. Some penguins had small babies and this was also the busiest spot on our day trip.

After we looked at these cute little creators we had lunch at a local restaurant where we indulged in some delicious fish dishes.

Next up we fed Ostriches. This was also my first time feeding them. It was kind of scary and fun. The female birds wanted to eat my entire hand plus the treats.

Our next stop: Wine tasting. We never did a wine tasting tour before and I was excited to try some South African wines. Hubby Eric is not really into drinking but gave it a shot. We did out wine tasting at Buitenverwachting winery. We sample white wines, rose and a red. I loved the rose so much I ended up buying a bottle and shared it with my mom back in Germany. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find the same wine in the U.S.

After the visit to the winery, our tour came to an end and our guide drove us back to the hotel. The entire day was a mixture of rain and sunshine with strong winds.

Day 3:

Today we were supposed to dive with Sharks but the tour operators called us to cancel the tour due to rough seas. The tour was postponed. Luckily, we decided to stay for 3 days in Cape Town.  This day wasn’t planes but a quick Google search and I know what to do.

First, we visited the Aquarium. I love aquariums they are always so calming. After seeing aquarium we decided to take a trolly up to the Table Mountain. I mean what would a trip to Cape Town be without visiting the Table Mountain? Today’s day was much nicer than yesterday. No rain only sunshine. On top of the Table Mountain, we could see the entire city but it was pretty cold up there.

We still had some hours left in the day so we decided to visit the

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The garden is so huge it would take an entire day to see everything so we decided to just walk around and see what we can find. But before we started anything we sat down at the Cafe to eat some Belgium waffles with chocolate sauce. Don’t ask me why but the people in South Africa know how to make some incredible good Belgium waffles.

After our stomachs were filled we discovered the garden with its plants and flowers. By accident, we found the boomslang bridge which offered a fantastic view. We also spotted an owl sleeping in the trees. The boomslang bridge got its name form the boomslang snake that lives in South Africa.

At dawn, we returned back to the hotel to eat dinner. I was so cold at the end of the day because my wardrobe wasn’t prepared for winter so I ended up wearing Eric’s jacket. Luckily, he brought two jackets.

Day 4:

Let me start this day by saying the entire trip we have been pretty lucky. We’ve seen the Big Five and plenty of cats during our Safari and now our guide for the Shark Cage diving called us to let us know the tour is happening.

We packed our luggage and asked the guide if he could drop us off at the airport after the tour because this was our last day in Cape Town. Now, all we have to do is cross our fingers to see sharks and hope that we don’t miss our flight.

We drove about 2 ½ to Gansbaai. We got a safety instruction and our small group boarded the ship. Earlier this morning another boat spotted a Great White. About 20 minutes later we arrived at the diving spot. One of the crew members discarded fish remains into the water to attract the sharks. Our guide told us that Great Whites are not as common anymore and they haven’t seen one in a very long time. Of course, if you take a tour like this you can never expect to see anything. We were the second group to enter the cage. The cage was on the right side of the boat and you enter the cage from on top. We wore wet suites to stay somehow warm. One of the crew members was attracting the sharks and another was telling us when to dive and where to look.

We have seen a few bronze sharks and then (I told you before we are pretty lucky) a beautiful Great White was swimming by our cage. A few minutes later a younger adult Great White was passing by. The guide from the boat told us to get out of the cage so that the other people I also have a chance to see the Great White. Unfortunately for them the adult Great White never returned. In the meantime, Eric got sea sick because the boat was rocking non-stop.

Since our dive ended early we got a second chance to go back into the cage. As soon we got back into the cage the younger adult Great White returned. Our guide couldn’t believe it.

This was a very successful trip. I could never imagine being that close to a Great White. This also made me realize that sharks are actually pretty gentle and don’t act aggressively.

We also made it on time to catch our flight to our next destination.

Thanks for stopping by!
