what to do in fiji

Hey Fashionistas,

Day 4: Bola Fiji!

Bye-bye cold Sydney and hello sunshine! We flew from Sydney to Nadi and thankfully we came early to the airport. Our initial flight was delayed 6 hours so the airline got us onto an earlier flight. The flight was around 4 hours so not too bad!

Arrived in Fiji we took a taxi to the hotel. We stayed at the Nalagi hotel close to the airport. The thing with Fiji is that if you stay at the main island there’s not much to do. All the beautiful pictures island you’ll see on TV are at least a 2-hour boat ride from the main island Nadi. I was aware of that so the main important part for us was to get a hotel close to the airport and the port.

The hotel was nice and I would recommend it. There were two restaurants inside the hotel - one Chinese and one that serves all kinds of food. The entire trip to Australia we were eating mainly Asian food. I really don’t know what people mean my outback steak because we did not find one decent steak house in Australia.

Anyways. Our hotel included breakfast and a spacious room with a balcony. The hotel also had a rooftop infinity pool.

As always I booked all our tours in advance so our first tour took us to Tivua Island. A driver picked us up and drove us to the port. From there we took a catamaran ride to the island which took about 2 hours. Since we visited Fiji during the winter months the chance of rain and bad weather was much higher. The temperature doesn’t change much so it was still hot and humid.

During our boat ride, it started to drizzle and clouds were covering the sun. I believed in our vacation luck that sooner or later the sun is coming out and I was right. We arrived at the island and the sun started to come out. No more rain for the rest of the day!

The tour included snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and food. They leave it up to you what you want to do. Of course, we went snorkeling. The corals are similar to the once we’ve seen at the Great Barrier Reef. We also got lucky and encountered a reef shark so that was awesome!

Around noon lunch was served which included a buffet of different meats and salads and alcohol. I choose to try the Fiji Gold and it wasn’t too bad. Nothing like a good ‘ol German Beer but it did its job.

After lunch, we strolled around, took another dip in the water and eventually headed back to the boat.

At the hotel, we wanted to jump into the pool but it was too cold. Instead, we showered and ate dinner at the Chinese place. They offered Conocut jelly drinks. So basically the coconut water turned into a soft spoonable jelly that immediately melts in your mouth. Really delicious - I am missing this drink already!

Resume: Fiji is similar to Hawaii although I haven’t been to Hawaii. If you are in the area I would recommend to visit Fiji but it’s not a must. I think it sounds “fancier” than it is. The people are 50/50. We meet some really friendly people and some really rude people. The airport staff, the taxi driver and some people working at the hotel weren’t nice at all but I didn’t come to meet people I came to snorkel. The underwater world is beautiful but Tivua Island area had a lot of coral bleaching. So you won’t see that much colorful fish and corals. Do your research before you head to an island.
