maniti lodge

Hey Fashionistas,

We just got back from Peru. It was my husband’s dream to visit the Amazon Rainforest so we finally did it - no convincing needed on his end. Did I ever imagine hiking the jungle and canoeing on the Amazon river? No, but I am glad I did it.

We booked a three-day jungle adventure. We flew from LA to Lima to Iquitos. We arrived early in the morning took a taxi (totally got screwed over by the taxi driver) to the meeting point. At the meeting point, we met our guide. Our guide, Nestor, who grew up in the jungle was so knowledgeable. He knew every bird, every noise, every flower and berry in the forest.

We took a two-hour boat ride to the lodge. On our commute, we saw river dolphins. Unfortunately, we were not able to see pink dolphins. After about two hours we arrived at the Maniti Lodge. We moved into our little bungalow. The bungalows are very simple but cute. Electricity is on for about 3 hours a day and there is no electricity after 9PM. There is also no hot water so we showered with cold water which is totally fine considering the fact that it is constantly 85 Fahrenheit. The three-day jungle adventure includes the bungalow, food (breakfast, lunch and, dinner) and various tours.

We did a jungle hike, a night jungle hike, we woke up early in the morning to see the sunrise over the Amazon river. We did some bird watching. We visited a native tribe where we danced together and learned more about their culture. We saw giant water lilies and sampled some local liquor. We went piranha fishing in a canoe and later on we ate what we caught. Surprisingly piranha does not taste fishy whatsoever. I caught a few fish - my dad would have been proud of me. I got the chance to hold a sloth and a toucan. We saw a breathtaking sunset and ate ate fruits from the rainforest. We saw three different types of monkeys, an iguana, different species of ants, and so much more.

If you are a nature person I can strongly recommend this tour. I don’t have words for the beauty I have seen in the past three days. The rainforest is ginormous and absolutely beautiful. Regardless if you see animals or not it is an unforgettable experience. I will let the images speak for themselves. Make sure to scroll down all the way!

Keep in mind that Peru and especially the Amazon jungle are located in a third world country. That means that the water quality is not the best - the toilet water was black so was the water that came out of the fosit. I would recommend getting needed vaccinations at least 2 months in advance. Also bring bug repellent, a flashlight and some boots. I would also leave the luggage at home an option in for a backpack. It was a pain in the butt to get our luggage in the boat and through the mud into the bungalow.

Thanks for stopping by!
